I'm planning a road trip toward the beginning of May to celebrate my 25th anniversary. Am driving from Michigan to New Mexico and Arizona and back.
In New Mexico, I'm planning to go through Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos and Madrid on the turquoise trail. In Arizona I'm planning to go through Phoenix, Scottsdale, Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona.
Anybody have some suggestions of places to see, places to stay or restaurants. I'm usually interested in the Arts, historic sights and general places of interest. I've been to Albuquerque before but not the others. Am reading through some brochures from AAA.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I made a road trip from Denver in a big looop through Wyoming down to Las Vegas back around to Denver. Monument Valley and Valley of the Gods is AWESOME Going through Arizona I remember enjoying Four Corners. Kinda Tourist Trap but some good Indian made Arrows and pendant/fetishes. Just go slow and admire the view. It is truely georgeous out there. I would move to the Dessert but employment was an issue. Have fun and take pictures.

I loved Carlsbad caverns in the southeast portion of New Mexico. It's awesome to see.

No Grand Canyon? It's a heck of a lot better than Phoenix and Scottsdale. You could stay at Little America in Flagstaff. Flagstaff is a neat little town (not that little anymore I guess). ....

yooperpete, the wife and I celebrate our 25th in September. We were planning on re-tracing the honeymoon trip ( Michigan-Grand Tetons-Glacier-Banf-Jasper-Michigan ). We did the honeymoon in a pick-up camper, not sure she wants to "re-live" it that much. We'll be watching your post for ideas.

On a previous trip 8-10 years back we headed in through I-40 to Flagstaff and went to the Canyon. We hiked about 3/4 down the Bright Angel Pass and toured the entire South rim. On the way back we hit the Northeast corner of Arizona in Indian country and went to the Hubbell Trading post and did the Canyon De Chelly ruins near Chinle and headed up to 4 corners into Colorado and did the Mesa Verde ruins, Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Aspen and Vail heading home through Denver on I-70.
We missed Monument Valley which I regret and will miss it this trip also. We did a tour about 12 years ago through South Dakota and Wyoming to Yellowstone but skipped Jackson Hole. Some day I'd like to do a Utah trip hitting the Monument Valley, see the other side of the canyon and spend time in Moab with Dinasaur excavations. That trip I want to come in through the top on 2 and return on 94 and check out Montana on the way and see the Little Big Horn being there during a Rendezvous.
The Carlsbad cavern sounds like a nice side trip. We saw the Mermec caves in Missouri a long time ago.
I understand Phoenix has a botanical garden with lots of cactus. Jerome is an old cowboy town and Sedona is heavy into the arts.
We've seen allot of country that brings back good family memories. It is a surprise trip that my wife knows nothing about. Think I'll give her 3 days notice. She won't know that our daughter is flying out to Phoenix to meet us until the morning of. We're taking our dog, a yellow lab with us. Hope that isn't a mistake!

I think you're talking about the botanical garden near the zoo, just north of Tempe, near "hole in the rock". When I was in high school we took a field trip there. I wasn't into cactus much, having grown up in AZ, but as I recall it was pretty nice. The Phoenix zoo is a good zoo, too. Our next door neighbor used to be the zoo veterinarian there.
Jerome is known as a ghost town but it's mostly a tourist trap these days. Still, that can be fun.
In Sedona be sure to wear your tinfoil hats!
Keep your doggie cool - temps will probably be in the hundreds while you're there and it bears mentioning that the temp in a parked car can toast a dog in short order.
Most importantly - have a good time! Family is what it's all about. ....

Yooperpete, I would definitely suggest the Grand Canyon. I have been to Sedona and Phoenix and in my opinion the best of Arizona is the canyon. Get on the national park web site and locate lodging in the park. My wife and I visited the canyon in late January, no crowds.
Las Vegas is only 4 -5 hours from the canyon and from there you can be in Death Valley in about 2 hours. Death Valley is a nice place to visit, but not in the summer. Due to the rain this year there's a lot of wild flowers in bloom. We stayed at Furnace Creek.
If you are going to visit more than a couple of national parks, purchase an annual pass for $50.
Also, there is wonderful scenery in southern Utah. Have fun. Dave ....
